Chinese movies racked up a strong run at the box office in the final week of the year, led byTsui Hark’s 3D epic, The Taking of Tiger Mountain, which grossed $51.29 million in its opening six days.
Featuring Lin Gengxin, Zhang Hanyu, Tony Leung and Du Yiheng, the movie tells of a conflict between a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) squad and a bandit gang in northeast China during the Chinese revolution.

A 3D film version of the Peking opera Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy was one of the eight plays allowed to be staged in China during the period of ideological frenzy known as the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). It in turn was based on a novel written in 1957 by Chinese writer Qu Bo.
Tiger Mountain notched up 211,787 screenings and 7.6 million admissions, according to data from Entgroup.

While this year’s box office total is unlikely to reach the 30 billion yuan ($4.82 billion) target set earlier in the year, the path has been cleared of Hollywood tentpoles during the holiday period, and domestic movies are expected to take 55 percent of the total box office for the year.
China’s domestic box office is about $2.49 billion, accounting for 53.5 percent of the total box office, while imports made up $2.17 billion or 46.5 percent of the total box office.
Behind Tiger Mountain was Gu Changwei‘s romantic comedy Love on the Cloud, which has made a cume of $23.17 million after five days. There were 159,791 screenings and 4.04 million admissions.
Jiang Wen‘s 3D epic Gone with the Bullets continued its strong run in its opening weekend, shaking off mixed reviews and a pre-release censorship row to take another $20.23 million for a total of $75.5 million after 11 days.

The movie had 177,004 screenings and 2.91 million screenings.
Zhang Yibai‘s coming-of-age drama Fleet of Time took another $4.35 million for a cume of $93.47 million, while John Woo‘s big-budget epicThe Crossing: Part 1 added $2.58 million for a total of $32.38 million after 27 days.
Animated toon The Nut Job took $2.53 million in its opening three days, followed by the romantic comedy Meet Miss Anxiety, directed by South Korean film director Kwak Jae-yong, which took another $1.68 million for a cume of $25.91 million after 17 days.

The top 10 was rounded out by Spanish-French movie The Last Days, which took $1.29 million in its opening weekend just ahead of Golden Days with $1.27 million.
