All 34 titles allocated to Hollywood and other foreign movies under China’s revenue-share quota system have now been allocated for 2014, and they include a Chinese release for\u00a0Penguins of Madagascar\u00a0<\/em>weeks before it opens globally.<\/p>\n

Christopher Nolan<\/strong>‘s\u00a0Interstellar<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>which just managed to gain inclusion in this year’s list \u2013 there had been fears the\u00a0MatthewMcConaughey\u00a0<\/strong>movie would not make the cut this year and have to wait until next year’s quota list.<\/p>\n

Also among the movies making up the last six places were\u00a0Ice Age: The Meltdown,\u00a0<\/em>which is\u00a0currently showing in Chinese cinemas<\/a>\u00a0and has taken $4.32 million in its first week.<\/p>\n

Because of the difficulty in scheduling movies this late in the year, Oriental DreamWorks have brought forward the Chinese release ofPenguins of Madagascar\u00a0<\/em><\/a>to the middle of November, days before it is due to premiere Stateside and in other markets.<\/p>\n

Also in there is\u00a0The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0African Safari.<\/em><\/p>\n

The list of overseas pictures also include non-Hollywood titles such as Korea’s\u00a0Roaring Currents<\/em>, which will be shown in some 3,000 theaters throughout China with China’s largest state-run movie distributor, China Film Group, according to South Korea’s CJ E&M Corp.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other big Hollywood titles set to open before year-end, which have already been announced, include\u00a0The Maze Runner, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Hercules.<\/em><\/p>\n

Marvel’s\u00a0Guardians of the Galaxy<\/em>, which is only screening in 3D in China, is currently topping the box office charts in China, having taken $69 million in 10 days there.<\/p>\n

The system restricting foreign imports to 34 movies a year on a revenue share basis is expected to open up in 2017-2018 as China is required to meet the terms of an agreement on quotas with the World Trade Organization signed in 2012, valid for five years.<\/p>\n

It’s been a big year for Hollywood in China this year. With a cume of over $320 million in China,Transformers: Age of Extinction\u00a0<\/em>will have done much to skew the full-year box office figures in Hollywood’s favor this year, but there are some domestic heavy hitters still to come which could push things China’s way.<\/span><\/p>\n

They include\u00a0Jiang Wen<\/strong>‘s 3D epic\u00a0Gone with the Bullets<\/em>, a sequel to the wildly successful\u00a0Let The Bullets Fly<\/em>\u00a0in 2010, which is due to open in early December,\u00a0John Woo<\/strong>‘s romantic epic\u00a0The Crossing<\/em>and\u00a0Tsui Hark<\/strong>\u2019s 3D epic,\u00a0The Taking of Tiger Mountain.<\/em><\/p>\n

China raised the number of foreign films that can be imported on a revenue-sharing basis to 34 in 2012, and industry sources have told\u00a0THR<\/em>\u00a0that the quota is also soon to be increased by 10 movies to include \u201cprestige\u201d, arthouse movies and Oscar-winners.<\/p>\n

These movies don\u2019t significantly threaten the box office of domestic films but help China sweeten relations with Hollywood, and meet its World Trade Organization obligations.<\/p>\n

Slow growth or even stagnation in the U.S. film market made overseas expansion essential, and Europe and Japan were saturated, so U.S. companies were looking to emerging markets like China for \u201copportunities to explode\u201d.<\/p>\n

The strong growth of the Chinese market \u2013 box office is expected to reach nearly $5 billion this year with 25,000 screens \u2013 means the U.S. has to compete in the China.<\/p>\n
