Many of their wishes came true and on Sunday night the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will broadcast its annual celebration of Hollywood and bestow golden statuettes on the handful of films its members voted the best made in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Missing from the party will be one film that two of the three leading\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0critics claimed was deserving not only of a nomination for Best Picture but also was so good that its Chinese maker should get a shot at winning the Best Director award.<\/p>\n<p>The film,\u00a0<em>A Touch of Sin<\/em>, is a portrait of despair and violence ripped from newspaper headlines in modern China so close to home that censors there never cleared it for domestic distribution.\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>critic\u00a0<strong>Manohla Dargis<\/strong>\u00a0called its director,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/10\/04\/movies\/a-touch-of-sin-four-tales-from-china-by-jia-zhang-ke.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jia Zhangke<\/a>, \u201cone of the few\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/01\/20\/movies\/20lim.html?pagewanted=all&_r=1&\" target=\"_blank\">filmmakers<\/a>\u00a0of any nationality who weighs the impact of social and political shifts on people\u2014in every shot.\u201d Colleague\u00a0<strong>A.O. Scott<\/strong>\u00a0also tipped Jia for Best Director and\u00a0<em>A Touch of Sin<\/em>\u00a0for Best Film. Dargis went further, suggesting nominations for Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (<strong>Jiang Wu<\/strong>) and Best Supporting Actress (<strong>Zhao Tao<\/strong>). In September,\u00a0<em>A Touch of Sin<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmlinc.com\/nyff2013\/films\/a-touch-of-sin\" target=\"_blank\">premiered<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S. at the New York Film Festival and then distributor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kinolorber.com\/press-detail.php?id=1472\" target=\"_blank\">Kino Lorber<\/a>\u00a0tried out a limited release in big city America. But the film\u2019s arresting and beautifully shot four-part story, was, for the most part, more than most U.S. audiences went in for,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinafile.com\/can-chinas-leading-indie-film-director-cross-over-america\" target=\"_blank\">no surprise<\/a>\u00a0given that the typical American moviegoer just doesn\u2019t do subtitles. Before long, Jia and Zhao were back in China, their brave work relegated to illegal bittorrent sites, pirated DVDs and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/visit\/calendar\/films\/1046\" target=\"_blank\">museum<\/a>\u00a0retrospectives.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>We help you find and contact book\u00a0<a title=\"Actors\" href=\"https:\/\/ft-agency.com\/wordpress\/actors\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Foreign Actors<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in China and Foreign Models in China<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Film producers who have watched the rapid growth of Hollywood\u2019s interest in China\u2019s film industry (mostly for its ready cash and its hungry, growing moviegoing public) are not surprised by Jia\u2019s absence from the Oscars. It takes considerable money and marketing muscle to sculpt a contender in the eyes of the Academy members who nominate and then vote on the Oscar winners, says\u00a0<strong>Janet Yang<\/strong>, who, in 1986, was on the first Hollywood studio\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/scene\/2012\/04\/18\/the-american-dream-alive-and-well-in-china\/\" target=\"_blank\">delegation to China<\/a>\u00a0after the Cultural Revolution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow often has a foreign-language film ever been nominated for Best Picture?\u201d Yang asks, answering her own question. \u201cAlmost never.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>British director\u00a0<strong>Danny Boyle<\/strong>\u2019s sleeper hit\u00a0<em>Slumdog Millionaire<\/em>\u00a0won Best Picture in 2008 (and seven other Oscars), but only a small part of the film was in Hindi and Marathi. If a subtitled film ever was to have a true shot at a major-category Oscar it would be as a nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. If history is any guide, the denial is tantamount to a ban. Without a release in China,\u00a0<em>A Touch of Sin<\/em>\u00a0could not be submitted even for the Best Foreign Language Film prize. By censoring Chinese films to uphold the ruling Communist party\u2019s view of an appropriate cinematic portrayal of China, film authorities limit the country\u2019s chances of winning an Oscar.<\/p>\n<p>This year, China\u2019s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film category was populist director<strong>Feng Xiaogang<\/strong>\u2019s famine epic<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/30\/movies\/back-to-1942-by-chinese-director-feng-xiaogang.html?_r=0Back%20to%201942\" target=\"_blank\"><em>\u00a0Back to 1942<\/em><\/a>, and it failed to get nominated by members of the Academy. Following are all the Chinese-language films nominated Best Foreign Language Film over the years, including the one Oscar winner, notably not from China:<\/p>\n<p>1990 \u2014\u00a0<em>Ju Dou<\/em>, by mainland directors\u00a0<strong>Zhang Yimou<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Yang Fengliang<\/strong><br \/>\n1991 \u2014\u00a0<em>Raise the Red Lantern<\/em>, by mainland director Zhang\u2019s Hong Kong submission<br \/>\n1993 \u2014\u00a0<em>Farewell My Concubine<\/em>, mainland director\u00a0<strong>Chen Kaige<\/strong>\u2018s Hong Kong submission<br \/>\n1993 \u2014\u00a0<em>The Wedding Banquet<\/em>, American director\u00a0<strong>Ang Lee<\/strong>\u2018s Taiwan submission<br \/>\n1994 \u2014\u00a0<em>Eat, Drink, Man, Woman<\/em>, Lee, again for Taiwan<br \/>\n2000 \u2014\u00a0<em>Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon<\/em>, Lee\u2019s winner for Taiwan<br \/>\n2002 \u2014\u00a0<em>Hero<\/em>, by mainland director Zhang<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>We help you find and contact book\u00a0<a title=\"Actors\" href=\"https:\/\/ft-agency.com\/wordpress\/actors\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Foreign Actors<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in China and Foreign Models in China<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>With so few officially-approved films to choose from and submit for nomination it stands to reason that even fewer filmmakers from China have ever won any Oscar, let alone an Oscar in a major category. In fact, only one Chinese national ever has. Composer\u00a0<strong>Tan Dun<\/strong>, from Changsha, Hunan, in central China, won the Oscar for Best Original Score for his music in\u00a0<em>Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon<\/em>, the 2000 Best Foreign Language film by Taiwan-born American director\u00a0<strong>Ang Lee<\/strong>.
