{"id":6810,"date":"2013-10-22T05:58:41","date_gmt":"2013-10-22T05:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ft-agency.com\/wordpress\/?p=6810"},"modified":"2013-10-23T03:49:14","modified_gmt":"2013-10-23T03:49:14","slug":"hollywood-must-think-bigger-about-china-says-producer-janet-yang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ft-agency.com\/wordpress\/hollywood-must-think-bigger-about-china-says-producer-janet-yang\/","title":{"rendered":"<!--:en-->Hollywood must think bigger about China, says producer Janet Yang<!--:-->"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--:en-->With a<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0few exceptions, Hollywood studios are moving far more slowly than Chinese companies in the world\u2019s second-largest movie market, said U.S. producer Janet Yang, whose works include \u201cThe Joy Luck Club\u201d and \u201cShanghai Calling\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Many studios, like Paramount Pictures with its \u201cTransformers\u201d franchise, have been taking steps to appeal to China\u2019s fast-growing audiences by hiring Chinese actors or featuring Chinese products in their films.<\/p>\n<p>Others are doing co-productions in\u00a0<a title=\"Full coverage of China\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/places\/china\" data-ls-seen=\"1\">China<\/a>\u00a0and some, like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/stocks\/overview?symbol=DWA&lc=int_mb_1001\" data-ls-seen=\"1\">Dreamworks Animation<\/a>, have forged nascent partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>But largely \u201cthe studios are not doing that much right now. They are feeling it out,\u201d said Yang, 57, who has built a career melding East and West since she advised on Steven Spielberg\u2019s 1987 movie \u201cEmpire of the Sun\u201d, shot partly in Shanghai.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen so much talk about things with so few results. But that\u2019s going to change,\u201d Yang, named one of the 50 most powerful women in Hollywood by the Hollywood Reporter, told Reuters during a visit to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/places\/china?lc=int_mb_1001\" data-ls-seen=\"1\">China<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s two different systems trying to come together, so a lot of dating and few engagements and marriages but probably more on their way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite an import quota, Hollywood movies have dominated China\u2019s box office \u2013 until that changed dramatically this year.<\/p>\n<p>In the period from January to June, domestic films outperformed imported ones by 65 percent. That was a major reversal from the same period last year, when proceeds from imported films almost doubled those of domestic productions.<\/p>\n<p>The stakes are high. Last year, box office revenue in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/places\/china?lc=int_mb_1001\" data-ls-seen=\"1\">China<\/a>\u00a0was $2.8 billion. In the first six months of this year, it hit nearly 11 billion\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/subjects\/yuan?lc=int_mb_1001\" data-ls-seen=\"1\">yuan<\/a>\u00a0($1.8 billion).<\/p>\n<p>Those sales lag North America\u2019s $10.8 billion last year but PricewaterhouseCoopers predicts the box office in the world\u2019s most populous nation will hit $5.5 billion by 2017. China has about 15,000 movie screens now and builds five to 10 each day.<\/p>\n<p>Yang, who helped Disney adapt \u201cHigh School Musical\u201d for a Chinese audience, said U.S. studios are taking mostly \u201cdefensive measures\u201d to avoid alienating an increasingly important market but should start to think bigger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow about actually creating something that is appealing for the Chinese and also for the global market? I believe it\u2019s possible,\u201d said New York-born Yang.<\/p>\n<p>LACK OF EXPOSURE<\/p>\n<p>Part of the shift in the Chinese attention to domestic films comes down to big improvements in story lines and production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really am impressed with the quality of films that have been coming out in just the last couple of years,\u201d Yang said. \u201cI understand why people are going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed to this year\u2019s romantic comedy \u201cOne Night Surprise\u201d and last year\u2019s unexpected blockbuster \u201cLost in\u00a0<a title=\"Full coverage of Thailand\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/places\/thailand\" data-ls-seen=\"1\">Thailand<\/a>\u201d as the new breed of Chinese films that take some risks and connect with the modern audience.<\/p>\n<p>Still, a made-in-China global hit with Chinese characteristics \u2013 such as \u201cKung Fu Panda\u201d \u2013 seems unlikely for the time being without Hollywood\u2019s help.<\/p>\n<p>That 2008 Dreamworks creation sparked some soul searching in China, with many wondering why Chinese film makers have not done something like that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt still stands as one of the few examples of a global studio franchise that was replete with Chinese context and it was not compromised on any level,\u201d Yang said.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese studios are torn between wanting to cash in on the cinema boom at home and trying to go global, she said.
