The Great Gatsby\u00a0<\/em>director\u00a0Baz Luhrmann\u00a0<\/strong>said Thursday that he<\/strong>reckons that the fact that his movie is an Australian production helped it get distribution in China. He also said was blown away by the possibilities that the country has to offer.<\/p>\n \u201cI am seriously considering a Chinese movie, and I\u2019m in meetings while I\u2019m here,\u201d he told a news conference at a downtown Beijing hotel the day after\u00a0The Great Gatsby\u00a0<\/em>had a red-carpet premiere in the Chinese capital. \u201cI take a very long time to decide what films to make, but I\u2019m seriously thinking about a movie set in both China and the West. China is overwhelmingly exciting place, and I want to participate in what\u2019s happening.\u201d<\/p>\n Quipped the 50-year-old: \u201cI am getting old, and I might only have one more movie left in me.\u201d<\/p>\n The filmmaker also said: \u201cI do believe the fact\u00a0The Great Gatsby<\/em>\u00a0is an Australian film was part of the dialog about why it might be accepted.\u201d<\/p>\n Australia has a co-production treaty with China, while the U.S. does not. While\u00a0The Great Gatsby<\/em>\u00a0is not a co-production, the fact that it is not counted as a Hollywood film will have given it exceptional status when dealing with the film bureau, which is keen to give valuable quota slots not just to Hollywood movies, but also to foreign films from other countries.<\/p>\n China, the world\u2019s second largest film market, has a quota of 34 foreign movies every year on a revenue-sharing basis.<\/p>\n Given China\u2019s love of 3D remakes of movies \u2013\u00a0Jurassic Park\u00a0<\/em>is currently riding high in China in a 3D version \u2013\u00a0Luhrmann\u00a0said he thought that\u00a0Moulin\u00a0Rouge\u00a0<\/em>would work really well in 3D. He dropped some other strong hints that Fox would consider backing him to convert it to 3D.<\/p>\n There were grumblings of discontent among the assembled reporters after Luhrmann, wearing a dark suit, was an hour late for the press briefing, but he won people over by readily posing for photographs and praising Beijing, its food and the very ballroom, in which the event took place.<\/p>\n Indeed, Luhrmann was inspired to film\u00a0F. I was getting the Trans-Siberian Express, and I had a recorded book with me and on the first night as I went through Manchuria I put on the recorded book and I realized I thought I knew this book, but I didn\u2019t, and I began researching the movie of\u00a0The Great Gatsby<\/em>,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n Luhrmann joined Weibo, the Chinese version of Twitter, and he had 10,000 followers early on. \u201cThis morning, I had 250,000 followers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cAll the air has become crystalline clear and I\u2019ve been able to see how vast and impressive the city is. I\u2019d heard it was a monolithic and powerful city, but this morning I could see this,\u201d said Luhrmann.<\/p>\n Australian ambassador\u00a0Frances Adamson<\/strong>, who attended the gala premiere in Beijing, said she was delighted that\u00a0Gatsby<\/em>\u00a0was an Australian production.<\/p>\n \u201cThe director is a son of Australia. We are very proud,\u201d she said at the press conference, which was also attended by local industryites.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s an Australian film. There is a lot of seduction and decadence, of fantastic jewelry, of jazz, and diamonds and pearls, and flashy yellow Duisenbergs,\u201d said Luhrmann. \u201cI\u2019m not just saying this because I\u2019m in Beijing, but I\u2019ve never seen the film technically projected, both in terms of sound and 3D, as well as I did last night. The technical execution was quite remarkable.\u201d<\/p>\n He spoke at length about\u00a0Leonardo\u00a0<\/strong>DiCaprio<\/strong>\u2018s qualities and how he and his career have developed since Luhrmann first directed him in\u00a0Romeo & Juliet<\/em>.<\/p>\n The film will resonate here partially because it features\u00a0<\/strong>DiCaprio, who is probably the most famous foreign actor in China because of\u00a0Titanic<\/em>, still one of the biggest ever foreign movies here.
