A Chinese military official is claiming that \u201cPacific Rim\u201d is just the latest example of American propaganda, warning citizens that they need to be more vigilant in dealing with the brainwashing effect these films have on Chinese people.<\/p>\n

In a scathing op-ed published in the Chinese military-sanctioned paper PLA Daily, which was picked up by nearly every state media publication in the country, People\u2019s Liberation Army member Zhang Xieli writes that \u201cPacific Rim\u201d makes a deliberate \u201cmockery of China\u2019s image and conduct,\u201d citing its depiction of Chinese people eating and making things out of the Kaiju as a prime example.<\/p>\n

\u201cHollywood has always been the best American propaganda machine,\u201d Zhang writes, adding that \u201cPacific Rim\u201d is more evidence of Americans depicting themselves \u201csav[ing] the world by playing the part of world police.\u201d The film also smacks of imperialism, Zhang claims, by not-so-subtly referencing \u201cthe real-life U.S.-Japan alliance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zhang also lumps several other movies in with \u201cPacific Rim,\u201d including the James Bond series and, oddly enough, \u201cIce Age,\u201d saying that all these films \u201cdisseminate the U.S. value system and global world strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perhaps most ironic, though, is that while Zhang urges his fellow military men to steel themselves against these films\u2019 message \u2014 \u201cSoldiers should sharpen their eyes and enforce a \u2018firewall\u2019 to avoid ideological erosion when watching American movies. More importantly, they should strengthen their combat capability to safeguard national security and interests,\u201d he writes \u2014 he makes no mention of the fact that \u201cPacific Rim\u201d had to be approved by Chinese state officials to be shown in the country at all. Every film that is not made in or commissioned by China must face government scrutiny before getting the green light to premiere in the country.<\/p>\n

Regardless of Zhang\u2019s warnings, \u201cPacific Rim\u201d is doing gangbusters business in China, raking in over $100 million in the country after debuting to a record-breaking opening weekend haul of $9 million in July. Then again, based on those numbers, maybe moviegoers have been brainwashed after all<\/p>\n

\nWhat I find very funny as that this is not something new, of course it\u2019s americanization..look at the McDonalds, KFC everywhere here in China. US Entertainment has been full of \u201cYEH We\u2019re number 1 !! we saved the world\u201d probably as long as China Cinema has been full of Japanese soldiers dying horrible deaths.
