As part of its China Canada Gateway for Film Script Competition, now in its second year, the Whistler Film Festival is hosting a Chinese Blockbuster Case Study, catapulting largely Vancouver-shot “Finding Mr. Right” into the limelight.

Made for only $5 million, the Canada/China co-production is one of the top-grossing Chinese films of all time, earning more than $85 million at the local box office.

Turns out the winning formula for “Finding Mr. Right” meant combining Chinese elements with a decidedly North American approach.

The storytelling follows a Western formula and the soundtrack features North American pop hits.

Written and directed by Xue Xiaolu, it features a Chinese cast that includes Tang Wei and Wu Xiubo. Vancouver-based producers Shan Tam and Michael Parker co-produced alongside China’s Edko Films.

Given the fruitful partnership, Edko Films will be one of the Chinese studios looking for its next big hit at this year’s competition.
